Boaz is a Canaan Dog in need of a new home. Born in August 2008, he is friendly and outgoing and seems to get along well with children and other dogs in a home situation. He is castrated and fully innoculated. He loves to play, needs a firm hand but with plenty of love and cuddles.

Boaz looks exactly like my dog that I recently adopted from a shelter. We were told she was a lab, but she doesn’t look or act like a lab at all. Ever since I have learned of this breed, I think I may have a Caanan dog. The only difference is her ears flap over slightly, but she can make them erect when she wants them to be. Other than that, she looks identical to Boaz. Beautiful dog!
Hi Elizabeth. It is extremely rare that a Canaan Dog may turn up in a rescue and the fact is that there are many cross breeds that can look, and even behave, remarkably similar to Canaan Dogs. In the UK we tend to know of all the Canaan Dogs that have been born here, and believe we know all the “accidental” litters too! Breeders here also tend to have a contract when selling a Canaan Dog, that stipulates they must at least inform the breeder should they no longer be able to keep their Canaan. If you are able to advise us of your dog’s age, or at least the year that she was born, then we would be able to check that those born that year are indeed still with their original owners and not passed on to any rescue.
We were told that Nilla was surrendered by her owner, and they did not have the reason on record (or they may not have wanted to tell us). They said she was 1 year old as of Jan 2011. After having her in our home for a few days, we knew Nilla had a unique personality and was VERY smart. We could not figure why someone would give up such a beautiul, smart, and sweet dog. We didn’t hear her make a noice at all for the first 3 days in our home, until the delivery man came to our door. Needless to say, Nilla is quite the guard dog. When we took her for a check-up at the vet, I am glad I had my husband with me to help control her, because we also found out she is very axious around other dogs or cats. She barked and whined like she wanted to play & fight at the same time. It was very strange. So I went to the bookstore and was looking through some dog books to see what kind of dogs looked like her to see what breeds may be in her. I first thought possibly akita or huskey mix (she has a very thick coat, a dense undercoat, like they have), but then I came across the Canaan breed, which I didn’t even know existed, and I couldn’t believe my eyes. It looked just like Nilla. After discovering this breed, I researched on the internet all that I could find out about them. Whether or not Nilla is indeed a Canaan dog or mix, learning about this breed has helped me appreciate and understand her and the challenges that come with her unique personality.
